Maki-e Fireworks Majo Blue Plate

A glass-urushi plate on which the brilliance of fireworks bursting in the night sky is painted over a deep Majo Blue ground. The firework patterns, built up from layers of gold and silver powder, are rendered using the maki-e technique.

The expression of the colors shifts with the quality of the light and the angle of viewing. Because the coloring is done by hand, the way the color settles differs slightly from piece to piece.

Glass urushi shows the colors of lacquer through glass. Since the surface is glass, it resists scratching even when knives and forks are used, and it is dishwasher-safe.

The tone of the lacquer shifts little by little over time. This aging, too, is part of the charm of urushi.

Available in three sizes: small, medium, and large.
