Kohiki Kezuri-otoshi Teacup
粉引 削落 湯呑みA kohiki teacup made by Kazufumi Wada, the fourth-generation potter at Keizan kiln in Toki, Gifu Prefecture. Each piece is thrown on the wheel, then the surface is carved and finished by hand, one cup at a time. There is something stylish about its presence, and it sits comfortably on the everyday table.
The glaze is kohiki, with a white skin. The carved marks change in appearance depending on how the light falls on them.
Wada selects and blends the clay and glaze himself. Using carving knives and metal blades, he shaves away the surface little by little. It is work that demands concentration, skill, and time.
Even with the same clay, technique, and glaze, the colors that emerge from the firing differ from piece to piece. Variations in the depth of the glaze, pooling, running, uneven color, and iron speckles are the individual character born inside the kiln. Small blemishes and slight warping are likewise not defects, and they do not affect use.
The uneven beauty of the carved marks cannot be reproduced by machine. Something made by hand sits well in the hand. It feels stable, and holds about 400cc. Since it can be filled generously with hot tea, it is also perfect as a sushi-style teacup.
