Kuro Oribe Matcha Bowl

A kuro-oribe matcha bowl made by Kazufumi Wada, the fourth-generation potter at the Keizan kiln in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. Shaped one at a time on the wheel, it is a powerful yet quietly composed vessel.

Kuro-oribe is a traditional glaze and technique born in Mino. Its deep black surface brings out the green of the tea. Black is also said to have been a favorite color of the tea master Sen no Rikyū.

Wada selects and blends the clay and glazes himself. He shapes each form on the wheel and fires it.

Even with the same clay and the same techniques, the finished colors vary. Shape and size, too, differ slightly from piece to piece. Iron speckles, uneven color, glaze runs, pinholes, small blemishes and slight warping are all part of the character born inside the kiln and from work done by hand.

What is made by hand sits well in the hand. Held with its front in mind, the bowl settles comfortably into your palms. It is delivered in a wooden box inscribed by Wada's own brush. A bowl we recommend both for an everyday cup of tea and as a gift for someone dear to you.
