Boar with Bush Clover — Hanafuda Guinomi Sake Cup
萩にいのしし 花札ぐい呑みThe hanafuda motif "Boar with Bush Clover" is engraved on a red glass guinomi sake cup. The red glass of the background has been cut away over a wide area, leaving the boar and the bush clover in red for a bright, luminous finish.
The boar and the branches and leaves of bush clover are arranged around the lower part of the cup. Each bush clover motif is given a soft shading, and a gradation is also worked into the boar's body, giving them a gentle texture. The red at the rim is left in place with a softly blurred edge. The design also continues on the base, so that — making the most of the transparency of the glass — it can be enjoyed both when looked down into from above and when viewed from the inside.
The material is Edo glass with a cased (kise) overlay. When the red outer layer of glass is cut away, the inner glass appears as a frosted-looking white. Because the colour is that of the glass itself, it will never peel or wear away.
As each piece is made by hand, the depth of colour and the placement of the design vary slightly from one to the next. The glass may contain tiny bubbles, fine streaks, or slight unevenness of colour, all characteristic of handmade work. The capacity is about 50ml. The hanafuda cards shown in the photographs are not included.
