Deer and Maple Hanafuda Guinomi Sake Cup

Made by Saori Sekine

We took the "deer and maple" motif, a favourite from hanafuda playing cards, gave it our own twist, and engraved it onto a red glass guinomi sake cup. It depicts a deer glancing back within a grove of crimson maples, and maple leaves drifting as if carried along the surface of a stream.

The design wraps around the entire cup, with maple leaves engraved on the base as well. The red is softly graded, giving gentle shifts of colour. Making the most of the transparency of the glass, the cup is a pleasure to look at from above as well as from within.

The material is Edo kiriko-style cased glass (kise-garasu) from Edo glass. When the red outer layer is cut away, the inner glass emerges in a frosted-looking white. Because the colour is inherent to the glass itself, it will never peel or wear away.

As each piece is made entirely by hand, the depth of colour and the placement of the design vary slightly from cup to cup. The glass may contain tiny bubbles, fine lines, or slight unevenness of colour — the marks of handwork. Capacity is approximately 50ml. The hanafuda cards shown in the photograph are not included.
