Inoshikachō Hanafuda Guinomi Sake Cups – Set of 3

Made by Saori Sekine

Inspired by the "Inoshikachō" (boar-deer-butterfly) hand in hanafuda, three motifs — "butterflies with peony," "boar with bush clover," and "deer with maple leaves" — are carved into red glass guinomi sake cups. Sold as a set of three.

The peony petals are carved one by one, with their overlapping layers rendered in relief. The deer, the boar, and the grasses and trees are given a softly shaded finish for a gentle sense of depth. Rather than removing the red glass entirely, a faint trace is left behind to create a gradation. Each cup also bears a motif on the base, and since the glass is translucent, it can be enjoyed when viewed from above as well.

The material is Edo glass in a cased (kise) style. When the red outer layer is carved away, the inner glass appears as a frosted-looking white. Because the color is inherent to the glass itself, it will never peel or fade away.

As each piece is made by hand, the depth of color and the placement of the design vary slightly from cup to cup. The glass may contain faint bubbles, fine striations, or slight unevenness of color — all hallmarks of handwork. Each cup holds roughly 50ml. The hanafuda cards shown in the photographs are not included.
