Butterflies and Peony Hanafuda Guinomi Sake Cup

Made by Saori Sekine

The hanafuda card design "Butterflies and Peony" has been engraved onto a red glass guinomi sake cup. The red glass of the background has been carved away over a wide area, leaving the peony and butterflies in red for a bright, luminous finish.

The peony is placed on the upper part of the cup and the butterflies on the lower part. Each petal of the peony has been carved one by one, with the overlaps rendered carefully and the red shaded in varying depths. The butterflies and clouds are carved freehand, without masking, so they retain a natural feel. The design extends to the base as well, and since the glass is transparent, it can also be enjoyed when viewed from above.

The material is Edo glass with a cased (overlay) color layer. When the red glass on the outside is cut away, the inner glass appears as a frosted-looking white. Because the color is the color of the glass itself, it will never peel or wear away.

As each piece is made by hand, the colors of the flower and butterflies, the depth of the engraving, and the placement of the design vary slightly from piece to piece. This design readily reveals differences in the thickness of the glass body. The glass may contain slight bubbles, streaks, or unevenness in color unique to handmade work. The capacity is approximately 50ml. The hanafuda cards shown in the photograph are not included.
