Moon over Pampas Grass — Hanafuda Guinomi Sake Cup
ススキに月 花札ぐい呑みThe August motif from hanafuda playing cards — "Susuki Grass with Moon" — carved into a red glass guinomi sake cup. The composition shows a full moon floating above a hill of susuki (pampas grass).
A soft blur is carved around the moon, expressing the way it glows faintly white. The design is carved down to near the base so that, making the most of the glass's transparency, it can be enjoyed both looking down from above and gazing from within.
The material is Edo glass with an overlay (kise) layer. When the outer red glass is cut away, the inner glass appears, creating a white design like frosted glass. Because the color is that of the glass itself, it will never peel or wear away.
As each piece is made by hand, the depth of color and the placement of the design vary slightly. The glass may contain tiny bubbles, streaks, or unevenness of color unique to handmade work. The capacity is about 50ml. The hanafuda cards shown in the photograph are not included.
