Hannya Wabori Engraved Talisman

Wada Chokin Kobo is a workshop in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, devoted to chokin — the art of engraving pictures into metal with a tagane chisel and hammer. Shunsuke Wada, the fourth-generation craftsman, carries on the technique.

The motif here is the Hannya, a mask from Noh theatre. Said to be based on the face of a woman transformed into a demon by jealousy and resentment, it has long been believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the wearer. Hannya also means "wisdom," making the mask a symbol of the discerning insight that sees things exactly as they are.

"WABORI TALISMAN" is a brass amulet accessory that brings together Japanese aesthetics and pop culture. The Hannya design has been rendered in three dimensions and reworked into a pendant top. The form is created by lost-wax casting and finished with traditional black dyeing using an oxidizing solution.

The chain measures 50cm and comes with an adjuster. A lobster clasp is included, so it can also be used as a key holder.

Brass deepens in character the more it is used. Care for it, and enjoy the way its appearance changes over time.
