Moon, Jet Black – Set of 5
月 漆黒 - 5枚セットA set of five small round glass-and-urushi plates, each depicting the moon against a jet-black ground.
They are finished using the makizuri technique, an application of maki-e. Lacquer is applied and, before it dries, gold powder is sprinkled selectively over it, creating a maki-e-like radiance that lacquering alone cannot achieve.
Through the clear glass you can see the jet-black urushi and the glow of gold. Because the surface is glass, it resists scratching even when knives and forks are used, and it is dishwasher safe.
The tone of the urushi shifts little by little over time. This aging, too, is part of the charm of lacquer.
